Scandinavian Fiction Recommendations - The Book Castle - 2019

If you're feeling overwhelmed, but still want to squeeze…. On Jan 25, , tired of negative film lists on Twitter, I asked people for "obscure [or] underseen films you…. Real hard. RIP Allan Fish, your film taste and writing lives on. As in all his work, the human psyche is explored by a very strong focus on near claustrophobic close-ups and long silences. Director Per Blom. I feel a lot of this had to deal with the fact that there was very little dialogue, kept mostly only for a few select scenes. It has too…. Although it does fall on the wonderful performances of Hilde Nyeggen Martinsen and specially Line Storesund…. Ice Palace is a film light on plot and heavy in atmosphere. It is a languid mood piece of repressed emotions, confused…. This review may contain spoilers. They are friends, but for Unn it is more serious, she admits to have secret and indecent fantasies about her girlfriend. Siss and Unn are duals of each other in the book. Siss' misery begins right from the first scene, which is kind of irritating because Siss was a proactive carefree girl. The story is interesting and something I would like to revisit again and the actresses playing the main roles did a great job whoever I feel the movie held a slow pace seeming to move along at little more than a crawl. Great film. A collection of queer characters, representations, and sensibilities on film. Here both are present by focusing on teenage girls. After a second viewing I am convinced that this is one of the greatest films ever made. In this case, the few present bits of dialogue are delivered in a seemingly stiff and distant way, creating a vivid sense of alienation. Preserving this list for posterity as it disappeared. This lovely detail is left out in the movie. This is clearly the kind of work that Blom's career was building up to. The actresses however did a fine job, able to make up for the…. Kieslowski and Bergman are very different directors, but their work also shares a certain thematic depth, a definite striving to plumb the depths of the human condition through their respective aesthetic tendencies. Margit Nordqvist. One need only watch Persona and The Double Life of Veronique to observe at once the deep similarities and considerable differences between two of the filmmakers whom I most admire. Missing: -….{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} Review by weak lungs. Expectations can be a dangerous thing. Line Storesund carries the film with her eyes alone, every emotion is felt through her glances, stares and longing looks, and in her only ever big screen performance, Hilde Nyeggen Martinsen is remarkable and even more mysterious. Combined with a cold color scheme, an eerie 80s synth soundtrack reminiscent of horror films and impeccable location shooting and production design the titular Ice Palace is stunning , the film conveys a lot with very little. I am still happy to have found a movie adaptation of The Ice Palace. Inger Derlick. The role of her school friends in what I interpreted as the 'shattering of the ice palace' was not brought out. Just as striking are the constant close-ups of the actresses with facial expressions rather than dialogue driving this account of awkwardness and an unspoken bond between two lonely teens. The exploration of the psychology of children and women is present in many of his films. Filmed in icy rural Norway, this movie has a magical and mystical aura. While you're here, leave me some reccommendations on this other list. It has the bold richness of Kieslowski's colour schemes, the powerful sense that the mood created is the most important thing, and the weird sense of ethereal mystery. Where to watch. Watching Ice Palace I was struck by how much it called to mind both men, as though it could easily be a work they had together created. Ingeborg Kvamme. The film stayed true to the book Casting the girls several years older evokes sexual ideas which were absent in the book, though. Studio Norsk Film. If I had stumbled upon this ethereal Nordic drama without any preconceived ideas I suspect I would have enjoyed it significantly more, not least because it possesses many elements I enjoy in film, but alas I was left rather disappointed by this mysterious little movie. Ethereal, beautiful, cold, and colder. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}In a remote Norwegian mountain-area in the thirties, two 12 year old girls Siss and Unn meets. The movie is quite old, so understandably there is a different rhythm and sense of drama than what I imagine a current day movie would have. I would have to recommend this movie for at least a watch once if you are able, I did and in a way I enjoyed it, however I don't think I will ever get around to watching it again. Per Blom Tarjei Vesaas. Way to end on a high note. Late 70s, 80s and early 90s Coming on Age and childhood movies. Genres drama mystery. What it all means is perhaps a bit up in the air, but the sensation of watching transcends the overall narrative. From queer masterpieces to camp classics, documentaries to romantic comedies,…. Even at less than 80 minutes, this sometimes feels like a short film stretched out to feature length, but it remains an affecting and heartfelt portrayal of adolescent uncertainty and desire - and is equally as enticing upon revision. At one point during the search, a man mistakes Siss for Unn. However, it's never clarified that Siss was a vivacious, bossy girl before Unn walked into her life. Oh well. Set in a small mountain community in Norway, two young girls share a bond and a secret, however when one goes missing, presumed dead to the unforgiving landscape, the remaining girl becomes isolated from the world and is consumed by a sense of guilt and melancholic longing. The movie is fairly true to the book eg: lack of dialogue is matches the sparse prose of Tarjei Vesaas It focuses on Unn as much as Siss. I can handle the truth. Sparse dialogues, sober performances, allegorical themes, melodic score, imitate cinematography and a vivid snowy backdrop are at the forefront. Ice Palace. The snowy locations are simply breathtaking, especially the titular palace full of icicles and seeming hidden passageways.
